Style it like Audrey Hepburn

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

From Dior’s New Look to arched eyebrows of Marilyn Monroe, fashion is a statement that you own. Fashion is the speech that you vouch, it is the influence that you infuse, it is a tale you announce.

Food or fashion, the mantra seems to be that of going back a couple of decades. And the fashion world is taking inspiration from styles of the 1950s. Considering the decade introduced some of the most remarkable fashion icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, and Audrey Hepburn, watch out for knife prints and satin blouses, which are steadily making a come back.

Sheer chiffon, silk and satin blouse with exaggerated collars, gathered necklines and puffy sleeves which were then popular, are once again gaining attention. Collars demanded all the fancies, decorated with pearls, chords, bows, and pretty laces, accessorized with rich gathers, ruffles, pleats, and tucks, in addition to Peter pan collar worn by the majority, cowls, boat necks and the portrait collar.

Satin shirt, printed A-Line skirt and bellies that shout Elegance

to bring out the Classy you.

1950s was a time of economic growth, the ladies were back with more ‘womanness’ and nipped hourglass figure after the great second world war. Fashion then had a great influence from the victorian era with long rounded shoulders, accentuated waistlines and huge, billowing mid-calf skirts.

Fabrics became more luxurious with Velvet, tulle, silk, satin and newly introduced synthetic fabrics whistled for. It didn’t take a lot of time to the innovation of Nylon in 1935 for it to replace the iconic silk stockings and for nylon to become synonymous with stockings.

The 1950’s comeback look is well-coordinated and accessorized with hats, shoes, bags, belts, gloves and jewellery, with pearls as the most important element among all. Classy single colour kitten heels, flats and wedgies are all to watch at, along with the classic Mary Jane shoes - single strap Oxford shoe and T strap bellies.

Keep your eyes on short curled hair together with the cut Poodle and Bouffant as a great inspiration. Styling them with headwraps, scarves and bandanas is always a good option.

Rues, bell net sleeve and accented knife pleats, its all about

making a statement with the head wrap to bring out the

VOGUE in you.

Peterpan collar, knife pleats and box pleated cuff to bring out the carefree, lazy, easy and breezy, Girl next door.

Fishnets, grey fur overlay and oh that corset, all set with not to

miss out the pearls.

The symbolic 1950s makeup look is strong, chichi and elegant. While retaining the “natural glamour”, lips were strong and intense, the eyes were emphasised with pastel tints. Try that stroke of eyeliner to define the upper eye and mascara for lashes, or express your love for arched brows, pencilled-in to define the shape.

Gather your sleeves and Satin shirts with some knife pleats and pull out a string of pearls. Buckle up your bellies for this year’s 1950’s look.
